A series of repurposed street signs and publicly installed signs created for the New Situationists exhibit at ProArts Gallery, Oakland. The works were featured in the 2019 collection Housing Justice in Unequal Cities, edited by Ananya Roy and Hilary Malson.
In low-wealth “up and coming” neighborhoods throughout the Bay Area, bold signs declare someone’s intention to buy your ugly home or to offer you credit help. These signs are daily acts of violence, unsolicited reminders of the instability of place and position according to economics and race. In We Buy Homes, the collaged paintings consist of reclaimed signs juxtaposed with all-American leisure objects that point to the impacts of eviction, displacement and dis-belonging. The publicly installed signs play on the hidden messages that live behind the realtors' original signs.
